Definition
Parts of Speech are the categories into which words are classified according to their function in a sentence.
In English grammar, there are eight main parts of speech.
They help us understand how words work in a sentence and improve accuracy in speaking and writing.
1. Noun
Definition:
A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.
Examples:
Person: teacher, doctor, Ram
Place: school, city, India
Thing: book, pen, table
Idea: honesty, freedom, love
Sentence Examples:
The boy is playing.
Honesty is the best policy.
Types of Noun:
Proper Noun (Riya, Delhi)
Common Noun (girl, city)
Collective Noun (team, jury)
Abstract Noun (happiness, wisdom)
Material Noun (gold, water)
2. Pronoun
Definition:
A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun.
Examples:
He, She, It, They, We, You
Sentence Examples:
Riya is a student. She is intelligent.
Ram is absent because he is ill.
Types of Pronoun:
Personal Pronoun (I, we, he)
Possessive Pronoun (mine, yours)
Demonstrative Pronoun (this, that)
Relative Pronoun (who, which, that)
Reflexive Pronoun (myself, herself)
3. Verb
Definition:
A verb is a word that shows action, state, or occurrence.
Examples:
Action: run, eat, write
State: is, am, are
Occurrence: become, grow
Sentence Examples:
She writes a letter.
They are happy.
Types of Verb:
Main Verb (run, speak)
Helping Verb (is, have, will)
Modal Verb (can, may, must)
4. Adjective
Definition:
An adjective describes or modifies a noun or pronoun.
Examples:
A beautiful girl
A big house
An honest man
Sentence Examples:
She has a red dress.
He is a brave soldier.
Types of Adjective:
Descriptive (happy, tall)
Quantitative (some, much)
Demonstrative (this, those)
Possessive (my, your)
Interrogative (which, what)
5. Adverb
Definition:
An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb. It tells how, when, where, or to what extent.
Examples:
She runs quickly. (how)
He came yesterday. (when)
They live here. (where)
She is very smart. (degree)
Types of Adverb:
Adverb of Manner (slowly)
Adverb of Time (now, today)
Adverb of Place (here, there)
Adverb of Frequency (always, often)
6. Preposition
Definition:
A preposition shows the relationship between a noun/pronoun and another word in the sentence.
Common Prepositions:
in, on, at, under, between, among, with, from, to, over
Examples:
The book is on the table.
She is sitting in the room.
He went to school.
7. Conjunction
Definition:
A conjunction is a word that joins words, phrases, or clauses.
Examples:
and, but, or, because, although
Sentence Examples:
Ram and Shyam are friends.
She was tired, but she worked hard.
Types of Conjunction:
Coordinating (and, but, or)
Subordinating (because, although, if)
Correlative (either…or, neither…nor)
8. Interjection
Definition:
An interjection is a word that expresses sudden emotion or feeling.
Examples:
Oh!
Wow!
Alas!
Hurrah!
Sentence Examples:
Wow! That is amazing.
Alas! He is no more.
